What is World Environment Day?
Every year on June 5th, World Environment Day is celebrated. This day is observed to promote environmental awareness and protection. The United Nations has launched a campaign to encourage global environmental protection. The goal of the day is to raise awareness among a rising number of people about the need to take specific steps to combat the growing pressure on the Earth’s natural ecosystem.
According to the United Nations, “the commemoration of this day provides us with a chance to extend the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible behaviour by individuals, enterprises, and communities in protecting and enriching the environment.” A healthy ecosystem directly translates to a healthy way of life. For food, air, water, and shelter, every organism in the world is reliant on the environment. Everything you need to know about World Environment Day 2021 is right here.
History Of WED – The First World Environment Day was Held In Which Year
On the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972, the United Nations General Assembly declared World Environment Day. Two years later, in 1974, the first World Environment Day was held on June 5th, with the tagline “Only One Earth”. The day allows people to address the difficulties that the earth is facing and to work together to create a more sustainable future. The concept of rotating the centre of these activities by selecting different host countries was first proposed in 1987.
In the years afterwards, WED has grown into a forum for raising awareness about issues such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illicit wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea-level rise, and food security, to name a few. WED also aids in the transformation of consumer patterns as well as national and international environmental policies.
Importance of World Environment Day
It reintroduces us to the natural world
We often overlook how important natural systems are to our own well-being. We are, nonetheless, a part of nature and rely on it. So today is the ideal time to visit your country’s national parks and celebrate this important relationship.
It increases public awareness
More and more individuals are realising the importance of managing our planet’s resources and ecosystems in a sustainable manner. That belief, however, is far from universal. That is why World Environment Day is so important: it provides an opportunity to promote awareness and inform friends and family about the fragility and importance of the physical environment. But, before you start spreading environmental awareness in your own neighbourhood, make sure you have a thorough understanding of the challenges. There’s always something new to discover!
It motivates us to do something for Nature
Contaminants and poisons have become increasingly prevalent in the environment, and these have a negative impact on our health. They have the potential to induce respiratory ailments and cancer, to name a few. World Environment Day motivates us to take action and fix the environment we can’t live without by increasing awareness of issues with the air we breathe.

World Environment Day Celebration Ideas / Ways to Participate in WED
Build A Garden
Maybe there is already a garden in your house but if you don’t have one, then it could be one of the best world environment day celebration ideas. You can participate in WED by just planting a tree in your backyard. If you already have a garden then you can plant a new tree that consumes more CO2 and provides oxygen. They not only clean the air and give off more oxygen but also cool down the surroundings. A study shows that a tree around a single-family home can cut air-conditioning needs by up to 50 per cent? There are many more benefits of planting a tree around your house. You can lower the amount of energy consumption, reduce waste, and save money. Now, you will have another hobby to pursue and a charming place to spend your mornings, afternoons, or even the entire day.
Make plans for a group cleanup.
You can organise a neighbourhood clean-up to celebrate WED. It’s a fantastic way to help the environment while also giving back to your community. There are numerous activities to participate in whether you live near a beach, a water body, or a garden. To improve the environment, you can start beach cleanups, river cleanups, and trash and litter collection projects. Don’t forget to invite your friends, neighbours, or volunteers to help you out with this worthwhile cause. You’ll need to arrange your activities once you’ve selected what you want to do. Another consideration is the proper disposal of the trash and garbage collected. This project is, without a doubt, the most effective method to commemorate World Environment Day while also making a beneficial impact on your surroundings.
Reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as possible.
You can also engage in WED by applying the 3R’s approach. Reduce, reuse, and recycle are the three R’s of the 3R’s concept. How can you put the 3Rs concept into practise? To begin, avoid purchasing things that come in single-use packaging, such as vegetables and fruits in plastic containers. Instead, go to a neighbouring market and buy fresh produce. Second, choose high-quality products that can be reused and repaired rather than being replaced. You can also rent or share items you don’t use very often. What comes next? Recycle. Composting is one of the most effective ways to begin recycling at home. Stop throwing away leftover food and vegetable components that aren’t edible and instead utilise them to make nourishing soil.
Consider carpooling or riding your bicycle.
People all across the world are already helping the environment by not driving to and from work, thanks to the work from home standards. We can considerably reduce carbon emissions by reducing the number of vehicles on the road. You can also get a head start on your duties by riding your bicycle or walking to the store. This means of transportation will not only help you stay healthy and fit, but it will also benefit the environment. If feasible, plan ahead of time and consider carpooling to avoid fossil fuel emissions.
Celebrate Virtually
If you’re looking for ways to commemorate World Environment Day online, we have plenty of suggestions. Instead of limiting your celebration to your house or neighborhood, use social media to reach out to people all over the world. Plan some unique postings to help promote the message of the theme of World Environment Day. Prepare a skit, sing a song, or write a blog to get as many people’s attention as possible. Aside from that, you might participate in one of the many virtual events taking place on this day. Several organisations conduct international events such as film screenings, seminars, and live interviews with green leaders. The objective of these events is to raise awareness about environmental sustainability.
